Top 3 Reasons Why Lightweight Backpacking is the Way to Go
By Wendi Garcia
We have seen how lightweight backpacking has gained popularity over the recent years, how more and more traditional backpackers are switching sides and getting rid of their forty-pound packs in exchange for Coleman backpacks that are lighter in weight and more convenient to carry.
It's undeniable that lightweight backpacking with its tremendous benefits is slowly becoming more widely accepted than traditional backpacking. If you're new to lightweight backpacking or have never tried it before, here are the top reasons why lightweight backpacking is the way to go:
- Safety. Lightweight backpacking is definitely a safer choice compared with traditional packing because it minimizes the risk of injuries such as sprained ankles, blistered feet, back pains and knee problems. A lighter load also gives you a more steady balance making accidental falls less likely to happen.
Aside from that, a light backpack also enables a backpacker to respond immediately to an emergency situation. In case of a landslide or a falling tree, it's harder to duck or run away with a heavy load on your back.
- Freedom and mobility. A light backpacker can walk more miles than a backpacker with a heavy pack which means more sights to see and enjoy. A heavy pack will leave you tired and always craving for breaks when there are just so many things to do with so little time.
It's also easier for a light backpacker to take side trips from the trail to see other scenic views without having to worry about a big load to carry around. For example, if you want to take a peek of what's up there at the hill, a light backpack enables you do that with ease unlike a traditional backpacker who would have to leave the pack at the bottom of the hill and go back for it after. At the end of the day, you'll find so many restrictions that a heavy backpack are putting on your backpacking trip.
- Convenience and comfort. Needless to say, a heavy backpack is more tiring to carry around than a lighter pack. Sore muscles and a throbbing painful back are just few of the results that a heavy load may impart on you. Sometimes, if you get so tired after a trip, it's easy to forget how beautiful the scenes were or how much you've enjoyed the backpacking activities because your exhausted body makes it hard for you to remember the fun parts of the trip. There are no such things with lightweight backpacking.
It's easy to fall in love with lightweight backpacking. The benefits of safety, convenience, comfort, freedom and mobility all make it worthwhile. Try it and after you see how much more sights you're able to see, how much more activities you're able to do, and how much more you've enjoyed the trip, you'll be glad to have made that choice.
